While we do our best to help everyone, we are a very small charity and can’t always help.

Over the past 12 years, we have learned many things, especially around medical care for Leonbergers. We have had to make some hard decisions in 2025, with the staggering cost of vet bills.

  • Age Limit: We are also limiting the age of the dogs we help to 7. More often than not, vet bills for older dogs are in the thousands, and they pass within 2 to 4 months.
  • Amputation: We will no longer be helping with the cost of amputation of a limb. We are truly heartbroken when we get these requests.  Unfortunately, what we have learned over the years is that most giant breeds do not live more than 2 to 3 months after the amputation. It is EXTREMELY difficult for the animal and the people. With the cost of this surgery exceeding $10,000, it is simply beyond our capacity.
  • Cancer: We will no longer pay for cancer treatment for the same reason. The outcome is poor, at best, and the cost is staggering.
  • Cost: We ask that the owner agree to pay 50% of the total bill.

We have not come to these decisions lightly. We asked ourselves: “Would we put one of our dogs through any of this?” The answer will always be no.

Please note, we do not send funds to individuals. We pay the vet /hospital directly. Oftentimes, we get an additional 10% discount, which helps a great deal.

We also ask that if we help you, please consider helping us by making a small monthly donation. We understand it can be difficult, so we will never make it a requirement to receive help.
